Social Media Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Small Charities

A smartphone screen displaying popular social media applications like Instagram and Twitter.

Duration:
1 hour (online)

During our Fundraising Working Group in April, we spoke a lot about social media and using our online presence as a tool to build relationships with donors. This practical, no-jargon workshop is a follow up session designed specifically for individuals, small charities and organisations with limited time, resources, or expertise.

In just one hour, you’ll gain a clear, big-picture understanding of how social media can help you amplify your message, connect with supporters, and boost fundraising efforts. More importantly, you’ll leave with straightforward, realistic tools you can start using immediately – no prior experience required.

We’ll break down what actually matters (and what doesn’t), how to choose the right platforms, and how to create simple, engaging content that resonates with your audience. You’ll also learn easy ways to stay consistent, even with a busy schedule, and how to turn online engagement into real-world impact.

What you’ll learn:

  • The role of social media in awareness, promotion, and fundraising
  • How to choose the right platforms for your charity
  • Simple frameworks for creating engaging posts
  • Practical tips for consistency without burnout
  • Easy ways to measure what’s working (and improve over time)

Who it’s for:
Staff, volunteers, and trustees from small and micro charities who manage (or want to start managing) social media without formal communications training.

Format:
A live, interactive session with practical examples and time for questions and connecting with peers.

You don’t need to be a ‘social media person’ to make this work – just a willingness to try a few new but simple approaches that fit your capacity.

This working group is part of the support we provide our members on fundraising. If you would like to join as a member, please email us at info@swidn.org.uk
