Trustee – Secretary
Summary of STAND and the role
STAND is an international development charity working across sub Saharan Africa to support people with limb loss through access to prosthetic legs and holistic care. As STAND continues to scale up its work across The Gambia and East Africa, this role offers a meaningful way to contribute to a values led organisation at an important stage of its development.
We are now looking for a Trustee Secretary to join our board and support the smooth, thoughtful, and well governed running of the organisation at board level. The role plays a key part in helping the Board function well. Working closely with the Chair, Treasurer, and Director, the Secretary helps ensure meetings are well organised, decisions are clearly recorded, actions are followed through, and the charity continues to meet its legal and governance responsibilities.
This is a steady, enabling role that suits someone who enjoys bringing structure, clarity, and follow through, and who values good governance as a foundation for impact.
What the role involves
- Supporting the Chair with the preparation and smooth running of Trustee Board meetings and any sub committees.
- Helping set agendas, track matters arising, and ensure actions and decisions are clearly recorded and followed up.
- Ensuring accurate minutes are taken and stored securely, and are accessible to Trustees when needed.
- Supporting good governance by helping the Board stay aware of its legal and regulatory responsibilities.
- Working with the Treasurer to ensure required statutory filings and returns are completed.
- Keeping key governance documents, policies, and trustee records up to date.
- Managing agreed board correspondence and ensuring clear communication between meetings.
This role is well supported and designed to be manageable alongside other commitments. The Secretary works closely with the Chair and fellow Trustees and is not expected to be a legal expert, but to help ensure good processes are in place and followed.
Who we are looking for
We would love to hear from you if you:
- are organised, reliable, and methodical,
- communicate clearly and confidently in writing and discussion,
- are comfortable contributing to board conversations and offering constructive challenges,
- have an interest in charity governance and good practice,
- understand the importance of confidentiality and data protection,
- are motivated by values led work and international development,
- have experience of charity governance or company secretarial work is helpful but not essential,
- are based in the UK.
What you will get from the role
- A meaningful way to contribute your skills to life changing work.
- Experience of charity governance within an international development organisation.
- A supportive and engaged board culture.
- The opportunity to work closely with the Chair and help shape how the Board functions.
- The satisfaction of helping an organisation run well, not just grow.
Time commitment
The Board meets quarterly online. There is also an annual in person board day, usually held in Bristol. Between meetings, the Secretary supports light touch coordination and follow up as needed.
Trustees are appointed for an initial three year term, with the option to renew by mutual agreement. This is a voluntary role.
Due to UK charity law and regulatory requirements, this role is only open to applicants who are UK based.
We are particularly keen to hear from people who bring diversity of experience and background to our board, and who are motivated by values as much as vision.
