The Open Society Public Health Programme

Sector: projects engaged in the relief of human suffering in all its aspects in the UK and overseas, especially, but not exclusively, those with a Christian emphasis and ethos.

 UN Women Uganda

Type of project:  Women’s Economic Empowerment for refugee women and women from the host communities, as part of UN Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, Access and Protection (LEAP) programme within Uganda’s Refugee Crisis Programme.

Location: the districts of Yumbe and Adjumani, Uganda

Eligibility: Ugandan and international women-led CSOs and NGOs that are legally registered in Uganda. Applicants can apply as a consortium to bring in the needed expertise to provide a complete solution. Applicants must submit at least two Letters of Endorsement, on from a gender equality or women’s empowerment mechanism, governmental authority on gender equality or other multi-stakeholder institution. Applicant organisations must have been in operations for at least five (5) years.

Grant size: Not stated. However, the administrative/indirect costs should not exceed 8% of the total budget. Budgets must be prepared in Uganda Shillings (UGX).

National Endowment for Democracy (NED)

The Edge Fund

Type of project:  Hard-to-fund work that challenges abuses of power and aims to bring an end to the systems that cause injustice. This could be our economic system, our political system or any system that discriminates against people based on their identity or background (e.g. class, ability, gender, race, nationality, religion, sexuality, age or other factors).

Location:  The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

Eligibility: all types of non-profit organisations can apply, including groups that are not formally registered. The average income of groups we fund is £2,500 and is never over £25,000.

The Elton John Aids Foundation General Open Call

Type of project:  Improving  the  health  of  people  living  with  HIV  or  at  risk  or  affected  by  HIV, upholding  their  rights  of  such groups,   Addressing  their  social  and  economic  needs  and strengthening  the  skills  and  strategies  of  organisations  and  activists  addressing  HIV. 

Location: United States, Canada, the Caribbean, or Latin America

Eligibility: Applicants must be non-profit, tax-exempt organisations led by and based in the communities being served.

Grant size: $20,000 - $100,000 for first-time applicants for 1 year of funding. Requests of up to $300,000 will be accepted from organisations working on a national or multination level.

Type of project:  Projects which identify and work on the root causes of environmental problems and approach issues with a commitment to long-term change.

The Waterloo Foundation Child Development Fund 2018

Type of project:  Research into Motor Impairments or Diet in relation to child development outcomes (cognitive/ emotional/psychological). In order of importance, funding will be provided for research, the dissemination of research and to a lesser extent, for intervention projects.

Eligibility: UK and non-UK researchers based at any university may apply

Grant size: typically between £40,000 and £60,000 per project. Please note this call expects 100% of grants to go towards direct costs, with 0% going towards overheads or other indirect costs.

The Waterloo Foundation Child Development Fund Practical or Dissemination grants

Type of project:  Practical projects disseminating research-based information about our focus areas and the way they co-occur. We also welcome applications for practical projects in Wales which help those affected.

Eligibility: UK CSOs

Grant size: Usually up to £10,000

Closing date: 1 July. Deadlines are flexible, but it is recommended to apply for practical dissemination projects at the same time as the aforementioned research projects.

The Aziz Foundation

Type of project:  The three focus areas are 1) Community Empowerment particularly within African-Caribbean, Gypsy-Traveller, Muslim, and White working class communities; 2) Leadership Development within disadvantaged communities and; 3) Public Engagement to strengthen the representation and voice of disadvantaged communities in wider society.

Location: UK

Eligibility: registered charities or charitable community groups. However, in exceptional circumstances, bodies or individuals working outside of a registered organization may be supported as and when authorised by the Board of Trustees. Large national charities with an annual income above £5 million are unlikely to be eligible

Grant size: up to 25% of a project’s full costs. This amount is capped at £15,000.

The Strategic Legal Fund for Vulnerable Young Migrants 

Type of project:  injustices and inconsistencies in law and practice that disadvantage or discriminate against vulnerable young migrants as a result of their migration status

Location: UK

Eligibility: Non-profit associations or solicitors firms that provide specialist level legal advice to vulnerable young migrants. Prospective applicants need to get in touch with the Project Manager to outline their proposal.

Grant size: Maximum funding for any one application will be £30,000 but lower applications are encouraged. This donor can make a contribution to overheads.

The Waterloo Foundation - Marine

Type of project:  initiatives working to halt the decline of fish stocks which communities in developing countries rely on, and those working to bring about sustainable fisheries in Wales. We will consider both practical local projects and strategic initiatives.

Eligibility: UK-based charities, many of whom work in close partnership with smaller local NGOs based in the countries in which they operate. Non-UK CSOs need a UK reference to apply.

Type of project:  The Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund funds projects which unearth and develop unknown or underutilised collections (such as art collection or artefacts with historical or community importance) to achieve social impact by involving and inspiring people, communities and audiences.

Type of project:  Sexual and Reproductive Health and nutrition.
