Introducing African Initiatives Established in 1997, African Initiatives is an international development charity based in Bristol, UK. African Initiatives supports women’s and girls’ rights projects in Tanzania. Building on their strengths, we empower women and girls with the ability to lift themselves out of poverty and bring about lasting change. Our vision is that women and girls in marginalised African communities enjoy equal status and are empowered to achieve their potential. Our mission is that, together with African partners we strengthen the capacity of individuals and communities so that they can demand and exercise their rights. Our programme priorities contribute to improving health and well-being, educational learning outcomes and livelihoods and resilience of marginalised women and girls. We will ensure the most marginalised women and girls in the community, including those with a disability or living with HIV are not left behind. We work to ensure that disability, safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, gender and climate change are cross-cutting issues throughout our programmes.

Job Purpose
As a Programme Officer at African Initiatives you will be an integral part of a small team with a full and varied role. Your technical expertise in livelihoods on livelihood centred approaches on poverty and vulnerability reduction, micro enterprises and/or land rights in Tanzania/East Africa will contribute to improving African Initiatives impact and effectiveness of its livelihoods programme.

You will be responsible for supporting the effective design, delivery, monitoring, reporting and learning of AI’s portfolio of projects in Tanzania (not exclusively in livelihoods). Working closely with the Programme manager and other internal stakeholders, the Programme Officer will also play a key role in securing new programme funding by assisting in or leading on the preparation of funding proposal narratives and budgets in close collaboration with partner organisations. Your role also contributes to mentoring and supporting the organisational development of African Initiatives’ partners in Tanzania, participating in key networking and learning activities and supporting the strengthening and growth of UK operations.

African Initiatives has recently been awarded two three-year grants by Department for International Development (DFID), focusing on (a) improving access to Sexual & Reproductive Health services as well as community loan and credit schemes for Vulnerable Women & Girls in Kilimanjaro and (b) promoting resilient and sustainable livelihoods through securing access to land rights for pastoralist communities. A key focus of the Programme Officer role will be to lead on the implementation of these two projects.
