Empowering Women in Sub-Saharan Africa

Event Description

Speakers: Lilian Looloitai (CORDS), Rahma Abdilahi (Sub Sahara Advisory Panel - SSAP), Nikki Giant (Full Circle) and Usha Ladwa Thomas (Welsh Government).

Gender equality is a fundamental human right and essential to effective poverty reduction. Globally, women and girls are more likely to live in poverty and less likely to be educated or to have formal employment than men. This is often compounded by a lack of rights to ownership or inheritance, plus a lack of political participation, decision-making powers and proper representation.

Hub Cymru Africa (HCA) funded projects provide protection for women in vulnerable circumstances, increase participation by women in politics and women's access to and control over agricultural resources and services.

We are delighted to welcome Lillian Looloitai, Director of Community Research and Development Services, CORDS, a voluntary organisation concerned with the development needs of the pastoral communities in northern Tanzania. Lilian is in the UK visiting CORDS' partner, African Initiatives, an NGO based in Bristol, supporting Maasai women in Tanzania through CORDS and other grass-roots organisations on the ground.

Drawing from the panel's knowledge and expertise, this share learning event will explore the need and how to empower women in Africa, why investing in gender equality is crucial for Africa's transformation and how effective the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are in supporting women.

Themes to be discussed: Economic Empowerment, Gender Based Violence, Female Genital Mutilation, Land Rights
